What Is The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Test?
The American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test is a certification program that is designed to assess a dog’s manners and obedience in a variety of everyday situations. The test is open to all breeds of dogs, and it is intended to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-behaved dogs.
The CGC test includes a series of 10 different exercises that are designed to evaluate a dog’s ability to behave in a manner that is acceptable to the general public. These exercises include things like sitting politely for petting, walking on a loose lead, coming when called, and behaving appropriately around other dogs. The test is conducted by an AKC-approved evaluator and is usually held in a public place, such as a park or community center.
To take the CGC test, a dog must first be registered with the AKC, and must be at least 6 months old. The dog must also be vaccinated and in good health. Owners are required to submit an application and pay a fee to take the test.
Dogs that pass the CGC test are awarded a certificate and a special CGC medal. They are also listed in the AKC’s CGC registry and are eligible to wear the CGC title after their name. Many organizations and insurance companies recognize the CGC certification as a measure of a dog’s good behavior.
